Cardinalis
This freestanding sculpture, entitled Cardinalis, was created for the outdoor South Terminal Garden at the Indianapolis International Airport.

Artist John Van Alstine’s red wing sculpture symbolizes Indiana’s state bird, the cardinal, and pays homage to Indiana’s native sons and flight pioneers, Orville and Wilbur Wright. The 40’ tall sculpture design includes an actual wing from a fighter jet and is supported with a structural steel tube and granite base on a concrete foundation. Providence considered wind loads and aerodynamic wing behavior in the design.
