Starling Yard
Starling Yard, a new affordable housing community, seamlessly blended historic preservation with new construction. The project involved repurposing a historically significant yet endangered school building alongside the addition of two, three-story new structures. Together, these developments offered a total of 97 units.
Structural engineering services were provided for the renovation of the 67,300-square-foot school and included identifying structural bearing walls for consideration in the unit layout, locating existing steel framing to assist in fire rating coordination, providing infill details of minor floor openings, and detailing and designing lintels for new openings.
Providence also provided structural services for the construction of the two new buildings: one 22,800-square-foot building with 22 units, a manager’s office, and community space; the other building being 27,800 square feet with 30 units.
