Providence Engineering is proud to announce that Jonathan U. Dougherty, Ph.D., Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, and affectionately known as Dr. J., has been named a 2026 Alumni Fellow by the Penn State Alumni Association, the highest honor bestowed by the Association.
Dr. J. is one of 15 Penn State alumni selected as 2026 Alumni Fellows in recognition of their leadership and professional accomplishments. The Alumni Fellow Award was established in 1973 and has been presented to more than 900 Penn State alumni.
A Career Focused on Leadership and Development
Dr. J. earned his Bachelor of Architectural Engineering in 1999 and his Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering in 2006 from Penn State. He currently serves as Vice President, Strategic Initiatives at Providence Engineering, where he leads workforce development, marketing, learning, and development, and chairs the Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) Committee.
Throughout his career in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, Dr. J. has focused on developing people, strengthening organizations, and supporting the next generation of engineering professionals. He has also taught at both Penn State and Virginia Tech and continues to mentor students and young professionals across the industry.

A Lifelong Penn Stater
Dr. J. has maintained a strong connection to Penn State throughout his career. He currently serves as Past President of the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society, is a member for the Executive Board for the Penn State Alumni Association and is a board member of the Fox Graduate School Alumni Society. He is also a board member emeritus of the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Advisory Board and past president of the Penn State Alumni Society of Architectural Engineers.
In addition to his numerous volunteer leadership roles, Dr. J. is known by most Penn Staters as “The Button Man,” for his tradition of wearing a coat covered in over 1,000 Penn State football buttons at Homecoming and other university events. This spirited display has been featured by media outlets and the College of Engineering, reflecting his deep pride in the University and its community.
His commitment to the University has earned him recognition as an Outstanding Engineering Alumnus and Penn State’s Volunteer of the Year, along with numerous leadership and service opportunities throughout the Penn State community.
