For National Engineers Week 2023, we’re sharing stories from Providence’s engineering talent to learn more about how they chose their profession.
Who (or what) inspired you to become an engineer?
I was fortunate to have engineering and drafting classes offered at my high school. Those classes and teachers inspired me to continue studying engineering.
Who is an engineer you look up to and/or admire?
William LeMessurier is an engineer I look up to. A student pointed out an oversight in his design of a 59-story skyscraper in NYC. Instead of ignoring her or hiding from the issue, LeMessurier checked her work and started a renovation process of the building to ensure public safety.
What is your area of expertise and why did you choose it?
Building structural systems are my main focus. I enjoy the design process and have always enjoyed learning how buildings fit together.
What is one of your favorite projects and why?
One of my favorite projects was visiting and analyzing the structure of an 1800s mansion. This huge home contained ballroom-size rooms, grand staircases, and even a bowling alley!
